July 3, 2009

The weather has been very nice here at Telegraph Cove and we had a nice Canada Day. We had some little helpers decorate for Canada Day and we would to thank Gillian & Emily Holmes for all there help.

Fishing, Fishing, Fishing
Fishing over the last few days has been excellent, everyone who has gone out lately has brought back fish. People have been bringing in Springs ranging from 30 lbs to about 40 lbs, we still have halibut and some rock fish coming in as well. Gordie, Roy and Leo have all had charters out and the people left extremely happy because they all had some salmon to take home.
Roy had a group of guys out today (July 3) and they came back with a 26 lb, 30 lb and a 31 lb springs and also got a coho or two (Not bad for a days fishing).

The Orca's have been spotted just outside the Cove along with the humpbacks.

Just a reminder about the Craft Fair and Annual Fishing Derby.
The Craft Fair is August 1 from 10 am until 4 pm and the Annual Fishing Derby is August 2 from dawn until about 4 pm. If any of you "Crafters" are interested in having a table at the Craft Fair just give us a call at 1-800-200-4665 and let us know what you would like to come and sell.

So the weather is great and the fishing is rapidly improving so it sounds like this season is going to be a great one.
We will have another fishing report soon, so make sure you check back.

New Season 2009

Well I had thought it was about time I up dated this blog....not much of a blogger!!!!
The start of the season is going well.
We start with a gradual opening with the Cabins on May 1st, then the Restaurant on May8th and the General Store with limited hours.
The May long weekend went well with The Top Island Econauts hosting their annual dive extravaganza. Divers came from the Lower Mainland and South Island to join in the festivities. Always a huge success.
We have some of our seasonal campers starting to show up, which makes it nice for Adrienne up in the campsite, not so lonely and quiet.
The prawning and crabbing have been plentiful!! Halibut fishing was off to a good start. Roy and Leo had a few guys out on a charter and from what I understand they did very well, the guys had a fantastic time on the water. Al McDonald (seasonal camper) caught himself a nice 85 pound halibut the other day. Nice Fish!!!!
The Spring Salmon as starting to show up as well. Conrad & Mary Porth caught a nice 27 pounder from the back side of Malcolm Island.
We have the Van Isle 360 arriving here on June 10th. Look out for those sail boats!!!!
Tide Rip Tours have been going out almost daily with their Grizzly Bear Tours.
Stubbs Island Whale Watching have started with their Natural History Tours.
North Island Kayak is up and running as well with their rentals and tours.
Dates to remember;
August 1st ....Telegraph cove Craft Fair.
August 2nd...Telegraph cove Fishing Derby with the proceeds going to the Salmon Enhancement.

Killer Whale Cafe opens May 9th, 2009

They are predicting a great fishing year this year. A Federal Oceanographer from Oregon said that after stopping for several years, a cycle known as the Pacific Decadal Oscillation is now bringing nutrient rich cold water south from the Gulf of Alaska. This will bring salmon numbers back to what should be normal numbers in a short period of time.

A quick update, Aug 8, 2008

The weather has been alright this past week, with fog in the morning and getting hot and sunny in the afternoon. The fishing has been picking up steadily, Roy Graham caught 5 fish this morning and we have had a few salmon in the 25-30 pound range this week.
A few weeks ago NHL's Willie Mitchell was out with some friends fishing and snagged at 140 LBS halibut! He says it took over an hour to get it into the boat! This caused a bit of excitment at the cove :)
The long weekend was long indeed, it was sunny and hot, and Telegraph Cove was booked solid in the campground and cabins! Our annual craft fair and fishing derby went well on the 2nd and 3rd, lots of people showed up to set up tents and sell their work. We were lucky to have beautiful weather for all to enjoy :) The fishing derby started off a little bit slow but picked up nicely into the afternoon.
Ken Hindmarsh of Qualicum Beach took the lead with a 31 pound Chinook salmon, Mitzi Baker was close behind with a 24 pounder. As for the bottom fish division, 13 year old Brenna Hammond, our own Mrs. P's grandaughter, took the winnings a 25 pound lingcod!
The whales were spotted swimming through right by the cove on tuesday afternoon, quite an exciting site for the tourists, locals as well! This is the 3rd time this season they have swam right by Telegraph Cove!
We still have a few sites left in the campground, and a cabins available for the month of August so hurry and make your reservation while the suns still shining, the fish are biting, and the whales are being spotted!

Telegraph Cove - July 13, 2008

We have had some really nice sunny days at the Cove lately, hopefully summer is finally here. Yesterday Gordie spotted a orange baby Orca while he was out fishing and to our surprise we found out that when Orca's are first born they have an orange color to them. I guess you learn something new every day. Later on in the day Leo was out fishing and phoned in to tell us that there was a pod of Orca's spotted over near Cracroft Pt. that made the guests who were whale watching very happy. Let's hope they stay around for the rest of the season.
We have had some more Springs come in over the last few days and now with Orca's in the area this is a good sign for the fishing.
Our cabins are rather full from now until the beginning of September, but there is still room in the campsite for anyone who is looking to do some camping over the coming weeks.
Gordie started his famous Salmon Bar-B-Cue's last night, they are always a hit with the guests who are staying with us and for those people who just take a drive down for dinner.
Stubbs Island Whale Watching are starting the sunset evening tour on Monday, July 14. So there will be three tours a day going out 9AM, 1PM and then 5:30PM for reservations or enquiries call 250-928-3117.

Another little reminder we are still looking for Crafters who are interested in coming up on August 2 to sell there crafts at our Craft Fair for more information please call Telegraph Cove Resort Office at 250-928-3131.

Now that we are in full swing here at the cove I will be posting a blog once or twice a week, so look for the fishing report and what's new and upcoming at the Cove.

June 29, 2008

The summer weather has decided to bless us here at the Cove, we have had some nice sunny days and it looks like this week will be a real nice one. Things are in full swing at Telegraph Cove, we have even had some springs come in over the last couple of weeks. Not many but a few, hopefully it will start to pick up when the Orca's arrive, but there is no site of them yet.
Gordie and Sally(Gordie & Marilyn's Dog) were out fishing and snagged a nice 30 lb spring and the halibut fishing has been good hear this season lots of nice big ones coming in, Roy was out with a charter and brought in a nice 60 lb halibut. Lots of people walking around visiting the shops and our new coffee shop. Looks like we will be very busy July and August, so if your wanting to come visit and stay you better phone and see what is left available in our cabins on the boardwalk. Remember we also have a nice campsite that is up in a treed area and there are still campsites left available.

Remember we are having our annual Craft Fair here at Telegraph Cove on the Boardwalk on Aug. 2, 2008, for more information please call the office at 250-928-3131.
